How to layer a bed for autumn
Three layers, two textures and one rule: start with what touches your skin.
The first cold morning always catches us out. The duvet that felt right in August suddenly seems thin, and the bed looks bare. The good news: a warmer bed is a matter of layers, not of buying a heavier duvet.
Start with what touches your skin
Washed linen is our answer for every season. It breathes when the heating is on, keeps its warmth when it is not, and softens with every wash. Pair it with percale pillowcases if you like a cooler pillow.
Add a layer you can take off
A knitted throw folded across the foot of the bed does more than look good. On colder nights, pull it up; on milder ones, it stays put. Choose wool over acrylic: it regulates heat instead of trapping it.

Finish with the pillows
Two sleeping pillows, one decorative cushion, no more. A bed that takes ten minutes to unmake every evening is a bed you will stop making.
Make the bed you want to get into, not the one you want to photograph.
